What to look before I buy makeup based on my skin type?
🎯Step 1: Identify your skin type and skin tone / undertone
Here are the basics:
Skin type
Oily skin: Your face tends to get shiny, especially in the T-zone (forehead/nose/chin). Pores may be more visible, makeup may slide off.
Dry skin: Skin looks/feels tight, maybe flakey, lipstick/foundation may emphasize fine lines or dry patches.
Combination skin: Some parts oily (usually T-zone), others dry or normal (cheeks).
Sensitive/acne-prone skin: Easily irritated, may break out, may need gentler formulas.
Skin tone & undertone
Tone = how light or dark your skin is.
Undertone = the underlying hue of your skin (warm, cool, neutral). For example: yellow/golden = warm; pink/blue = cool; a mix = neutral.
Knowing your undertone helps pick foundation, concealer, lipstick shades that look natural rather than “off”.
🎯 Step 2: Match your makeup formulation & finish to your skin type
Here’s how to choose the type of product based on your skin type:
What to look for in makeup formulations & finish
Oily skin: Oil-free, non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores). Choose products with a matte finish or “oil-control”. Use a primer that blurs pores/smooths, set with powder.
Dry skin: Look for hydrating/moisturising formulas, dewy or satin finish (rather than flat matte). Avoid too many powders, avoid formulas that enhance flakiness.
Combination Skin: You may need to mix/target different zones: e.g., matte for T-zone, hydrating for cheeks. Use lighter formulas overall.
Sensitive/acne-prone Skin: Use gentle, fragrance-free, hypoallergenic formulas. Non-comedogenic, minimal irritants.
Also - for any skin type: start with good skin prep (cleanse, moisturise appropriate for your skin type) before makeup.
💡 Step 3: How to pick exactly for You
Shade matching: When trying a foundation, swatch it along your jawline (face → neck) in natural light to make sure it blends and doesn’t leave a pale/ashy mask.
Finish based on skin type: If you know you’re oily (common in humid places like Maharashtra), pick the matte/oil-control finish. If you’re dry (maybe due to AC indoors or skin’s nature), pick hydrating formulas.
Undertone: Since many Indian skin tones are warm-to-neutral, check if you have golden/yellow undertone — if so, pick foundations with “warm” descriptors; if you have pinkish or rosy tone, pick “cool” or “neutral”.
Climate factor: Because of heat/humidity, choice of setting powder/blotting tools matter for oily skin.
Budget & availability: Many international brands now available in India; but local brands often give good value and are easier to test in store (Amazon, local beauty stores).
Test product in daylight, let it settle: Foundations can “oxidise” (turn slightly darker/orangey) after a few minutes on your skin. Wait 5-10 minutes after swatch.
